Care

Read this before the first wash. Most of what people call a fault in natural fabric is the fabric doing what it does, and most of it is preventable.

Linen

Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, with like colours. Mild detergent, no bleach, no fabric softener — softener coats the fibre and stops it softening naturally.

Line dry in shade. Tumble drying on heat is what shrinks linen. If you must tumble, use the lowest heat and take it out damp.

Iron on medium while slightly damp, or do not iron at all. Linen creases. That is linen.

Expect it to relax about half a size with wear and return on wash. Expect it to get softer every year.

Organic cotton

Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Mild detergent, no bleach.

Wash the first time separately. Organic cotton is unmercerised and can release loose dye or lint on the first wash in a way conventional cotton does not.

Line dry in shade. Iron on medium. Stable in size after the first wash.

Khadi

Hand wash cold for the first three washes, then machine wash cold on gentle if you prefer.

Do not wring. Squeeze water out, roll in a towel, then line dry flat in shade.

Khadi shrinks on first wash. We pre-shrink where the weave allows and state the residual on the product page. Slubs and small irregularities are the hand loom, not a defect, and are described on Materials.

Iron on medium with steam while damp.

All fabrics

Dry in shade, not sun. Direct sun fades natural dye faster than any wash.

Wash less. Air a shirt overnight instead of washing it after one wear. Spot clean where you can. The longest-lasting garment is the one washed least.

Store folded, not on wire hangers. Fold linen loosely; hard creases set.

A dropped hem or a lost button is not the end of a garment. Write to us through Contact and we will tell you whether it is something you can fix, something a local tailor should fix, or something we should have back.
